If you live in Oregon, you don't pay Washington sales tax on a new or used vehicle from Bud Clary Chevrolet in Longview. Bring your Oregon ID and proof of your Oregon address, and our team handles all of the paperwork, including your Oregon title and registration.

Washington does not charge its sales taxes on a vehicle sold to a nonresident for use outside Washington. Oregon charges a small use tax on newer vehicles instead.
| Tax or fee | Oregon resident buying at Bud Clary |
|---|---|
| Washington sales tax (8.2% in Longview) | Not charged when you qualify as a nonresident |
| Washington motor vehicle sales tax (0.5%) | Not charged when you qualify as a nonresident |
| Oregon vehicle use tax (0.5%) | Owed to Oregon on vehicles with 7,500 miles or less. We handle the paperwork. |
| Title and registration | Oregon DMV fees. We handle the Oregon title and registration paperwork. |
Rates as of 2026: Longview's combined sales tax is 8.2% (Washington Department of Revenue), the Washington motor vehicle sales tax is 0.5% (details), and Oregon's vehicle use tax is 0.5% of the retail price (Oregon DOR). This is general information, not tax advice.
If you live in Oregon, you don't pay our sales tax, and we handle all of the paperwork.
Here is a new vehicle with a $50,000 taxable price, using the 2026 rates above.

You bring two things and sign once. Our finance team handles the rest, on both sides of the river.
The exemption comes from RCW 82.08.0264 and WAC 458-20-177. Oregon's title steps are on Oregon DMV's site.

What I wish buyers knew: A lot of people across the river still think buying in Washington means paying Washington sales tax. It doesn't. If you live in Oregon, you don't pay our sales tax, and our team handles all of the paperwork. You pick out the vehicle and drive it home over the bridge.
The exemption is for people who live in Oregon and use the vehicle there. It does not apply if:
Longview is just across the Lewis and Clark Bridge from Rainier, and a short drive up Highway 30 from the rest of Columbia County.
| From | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Rainier, OR | About 5 miles | About 10 minutes |
| Clatskanie, OR | About 15 miles | About 25 minutes |
| St. Helens, OR | About 23 miles | About 40 minutes |
| Scappoose, OR | About 31 miles | About 50 minutes |
Approximate driving distance and time to 1030 Commerce Ave., Longview, WA.
Probably not. St. Helens, Rainier, Clatskanie, Columbia City and Vernonia are outside the Portland-area DEQ testing boundary. Scappoose is inside it.
Even inside the boundary, a new vehicle is exempt while its model year is within the last four years, and fully electric vehicles never need a test. Check any address with DEQ's lookup.

Thinking about a lease? Ask our finance team how it works for an Oregon resident before you sign.
No. If you live in Oregon, you don't pay Washington sales tax or Washington's 0.5% motor vehicle sales tax on a vehicle from Bud Clary Chevrolet. Bring Oregon ID and proof of your Oregon address, and our team handles the paperwork.
It is 0.5% of the retail price, owed to Oregon on vehicles bought from a dealer outside Oregon with 7,500 miles or less. We handle that paperwork along with your Oregon title and registration.
Yes. The Washington exemption covers new and used vehicles. Oregon's use tax only applies when the vehicle has 7,500 miles or less.
No. Our team handles the Oregon title and registration paperwork for you.
Not in St. Helens, Rainier or Clatskanie, which are outside the Portland-area boundary. Scappoose is inside it, but new vehicles within the last four model years are exempt.
A trade-in lowers Washington sales tax for Washington buyers, but you are not paying that tax. Oregon's use tax is figured on the full price and is not reduced by a trade-in.
Then you are not a nonresident for this exemption, and Washington sales tax applies.
About 5 miles and 10 minutes from Rainier over the Lewis and Clark Bridge, and about 23 miles and 40 minutes from St. Helens. We are at 1030 Commerce Ave. in Longview.
