A Duramax warns you about Diesel Exhaust Fluid well before it runs out, at about 500 miles, 300 miles and 75 miles of range. If you keep driving after the Very Low warning, the truck limits its speed to 65 mph, then 55 mph, then 5 mph. Adding at least 2 gallons of DEF clears the limit.
The diesel particulate filter cleans itself about once per tank. Idling and short trips keep it from finishing, so when the message appears, drive steadily at highway speed for up to 30 minutes. If a WATER IN FUEL message stays on after you refuel, the fuel filter needs draining and the tank may need to be purged.
