Three ways to end a GM Financial lease

Your lease agreement controls the dates and the dollar amounts. These summaries follow GM Financial's own lease-end FAQ and its Chevrolet lease-end guide.

Return

Hand it back

Bring the Chevrolet in by the termination date in your agreement. Depending on its condition and odometer, you may owe for excess wear, miles past your allowance and a disposition fee, which GM Financial bills after the return.

Buy

Keep the vehicle

GM Financial lets you buy the vehicle at any point during the lease. Request a purchase quote from your MyAccount dashboard; it is good for 10 days. GM Financial won't process a buyout through a non-GM dealership, but a GM dealer such as Bud Clary Chevrolet can handle yours.

Trade

Move into the next one

Return the lease and lease or finance something new, or have us appraise it toward a used vehicle. Where your state allows a disposition fee, GM Financial's guide says it may be waived when you buy or lease another new GM vehicle.

A lease-end timeline you can follow

  1. Two to four months out: get inspectedGM Financial suggests a complimentary pre-return inspection about two to four months before lease end. Book it through OPENLANE's inspection site at your home, your job or a dealership, with your VIN and GM Financial account number in hand.
  2. Next: decide what to fixYou can repair excess wear and take care of open recalls before turn-in, then email or fax the repair receipts to GM Financial so a credit goes on your account. Repairs you skip are charged later on GM Financial's Lease-End Liability Invoice, a separate bill from your final billing statement. Look up open recalls on our recalls page.
  3. The week before: clear it outDo a factory reset on the touchscreen so your contacts, home address, garage door codes and app sign-ins leave with you. Take out toll passes, parking permits, chargers and memory cards.
  4. Gather what came with itKeys and fobs (all of them), the owner's manual, floor mats, cargo cover, spare tire and toolkit, and for an EV, the charging cable that came with it.
  5. Turn-in dayBring it to 1030 Commerce Ave. by your termination date. You sign the Check-in Receipt here, along with the Odometer Statement from GM Financial's Document Center, and you keep copies of both.
  6. AfterwardStop any automatic payments, ask the Washington Department of Licensing (or Oregon DMV, if it is registered there) whether the plates go back, and look for GM Financial's Lease-End Liability Invoice 30 to 45 days later.

Wear and tear: where GM Financial draws the line

Some wear is normal on any vehicle. These are the examples of excess wear GM Financial's guide lists, and its printable wear card lets you measure them yourself.

Swapped to winter or studded tires for trips over the passes or up toward Mount St. Helens? GM Financial wants tires that match the original size and specs, so put an original-spec set back on before the inspection.

If the inspection flags worn tires, a warning light or a mechanical problem, our service department quotes the job before anything is done, so you can weigh the repair against the charge. Book through the service scheduler or shop our tire shop.

  • Tires: tread under 4/32 inch, tires that don't match each other, or a size or spec different from the originals, speed rating included
  • Wheels: a scratch or gouge longer than 3 inches
  • Dings: four or more on a single panel, or multiple measuring 2 inches or more
  • Dents and scratches: any panel with a dent past 4 inches or a scratch of 6 inches or more
  • Glass: a crack or chip 1/2 inch across or larger, or spider cracks
  • Interior: holes over 1/8 inch, tears over 1/2 inch, or permanent stains
  • Also listed: cracked headlights, mechanical defects, warning lights left on, and missing keys, fobs or equipment

Miles on an I-5 commute

A daily drive from Longview to Vancouver or Portland adds up quickly, and GM Financial bills every mile beyond your original lease allowance at the per-mile rate written in your agreement. Check the odometer against that allowance a few months early, while there is still time to compare a return, a buyout and a trade side by side.

Running well over? Ask for our trade appraisal before you decide. When you trade, we settle the lease payoff with GM Financial directly, and any value above that payoff can be applied to the vehicle you choose next.

The disposition fee

GM Financial describes the disposition fee as what leasing companies charge to prepare a returned vehicle for sale at auction (GM Financial lease-end FAQ). Chevrolet's lease offers running in October 2026 list a disposition fee of $395 or less at the end of the lease, but the amount in your own contract is the one that applies.

GM Financial says the fee may be waived if you buy your leased vehicle, or if you lease or buy another new GM vehicle, in states that allow the fee to be charged. If you buy or lease your next vehicle from us, a negotiable documentary service fee of up to $200 may be added to the sale price or capitalized cost.
